If breast cancer spreads, the lymph nodes in the underarm (the axillary lymph nodes) are the first place it’s likely to go. Lymph node-negative means the axillary lymph nodes do not contain cancer. Lymph node-positive means the axillary lymph nodes do contain cancer. Your doctor will use one of two procedures for this, either a sentinel lymph node biopsy/removal or an axillary node dissection. Axillary node dissection removes some of the the axillary lymph nodes, which are the lymph nodes located in the underarm. A mastectomy or lumpectomy.
